Opinion: I bought this amp hoping to achieve a big low end without the mud [using this amp with an ABM 410H]. Boy did I get it! Construction is very solid. It has a very hip backlit VU meter to monitor input signal. Inputs are proveided for Active/Passive basses. The "Input Mix" feature goes from solid state clean to triode tube grind. The Sub-Harmoniser feature adds even more low end by adding a note one octave below the note played. It tracks very well. The power section really handles these low frequencies well. Where other amps would be struggling this amp shows no signs of clipping providing lots of headroom. The "Sub Output" provides a filtered low pass conection to powered cabs providing even more low end. I play my Warwick Fretless Thumb 5 through the system and it sounds incredible. The lower registers are fully defined without the slightest hint of mud. This thing is the "REAL DEAL"! Opinion: Construction: solid, top notch. Two fans that blow air IN instead of out means that it stays cool. Aesthetics: powder blue and a VU meter on the front - the coolest looking piece of musical equipment since the Echoplex. Sound: Deep, round, vintage tone. It has all the tube character of the Boogie and tube SVT but much more definition and actually greater lows. A/B'ed: slightly less mids, but they can be dialed in with the extensive tone controls. One pre-amp tube with a variable selector switch and give you more tube compression and growl if you want it. And lots of power; I've never turned it up halfway, and I play against 2 Marshall/Boogie half stacks and a power drummer. Your control over the sound is essentially a well-placed seven band EQ. Low/Mid/High knobs (50Hz/660Hz/7kHz)
with four range knobs that adjust cut/boost for 180Hz/340Hz/1.2kHz/2.6kHz. The input has a VU meter to show you how hard you're hitting it, but it's padded well (a complaint I had about the Ampegs), so you can hit it hard. Octave switch has a built in Octaver that is clean and can be used modestly to fatten up any bass. What I have a hard time trying to explain is how this thing gets all the warmth of the vintage sound with all the punch
of the modern sound. You just need to hear it for yourself and see if it's "your sound". This is truly a remarkable piece of equipment, the only one that I've been happy with for more than a year. Amps tried against a/b in the store: Ampeg SVT3-Pro, Ampeg SVT4-Pro, SWR SM-900, Eden WT400, Ampeg SVT Classic, Mesa/Boogie 400+, Ampeg SVP with a Crest 900VS power amp. Who is this not for? Maybe slap players, who would want something a little more transparent. People who hate vintage sounds and want an ultra-clean, flat tone. Opinion: I purchased this preamp to be paired with an Ashdown [APM]1000 stereo power-amp and two Acme Low B2 series II cabs. I play a Steinberger XL2 (all graphite boat-oar shape), a Kubicki Ex-Factor, and an NS Design US5 EUB. I am very impressed with the versatility of this preamp. It can produce from very clean tones to very grindy sounds.
With the vacume tube taken out of the circuit entirely, and the eq shape engaged, it sounds very much like a Trace Elliot amp [...] but with the eq flat and the tube set to about half-way, it has a nice warm sound, even making my graphite steinberger sound more organic. With the tube engaged fully, it sounds much like an overdriven all tube head, making an overdrive pedal redundant for all but the most distorted sound. In all of these settings, the tone remains very punchy and focused on all of my basses. The sub-harmonizer, a relatively subtle octaver, is perhaps the coolest feature, producing a nice sounding and wheel-tracking tone an octave lower. It sounds especially cool on my fretless EUB, but I use it frequently on all of my basses as the music determines. The controls are nicely laid out and easy to use -- it's a simple matter to get a good sound, despite the versatility the tone-shaping controls yield. Many of the features are also footswitch controllable and several have led lights to indicate that they are engaged, making it a very good preamp for live use. The construction is very sturdy and it is really cool looking. The input level is measured by an old-fashioned needle guage that lights up and it has a large metal push-in button on/off switch. All of the knobs and slides are very sturdy and smooth feeling. Additional features: variable crossover with separte 1/4" high and low outputs effects loop active and passive inputs. Complaints: only a mono effect loop no balanced (XLR) outputs only one full-range output relatively uninformative documentation included. To sum up: While this pre-amp has some limitations (listed above), it is a very nice sounding, versatile, well-built, and cool looking pre-amp. I don't like that I have to use a y-cord to interface with a power-amp by the same manufacturer, and can't use the stereo capabilities of the latter fully, or the latter's balanced inputs. On the whole, however, I am very pleased with it. Sound is for me the bottom line, and it sounds very good. If you play a variety of musical styles, from rock to jazz, this pre-amp would be a very good choice. For the price I paid ($395 on sale fromBass Northwest--good guys), I doubt it could be matched, let alone beat. Opinion: I purchased the power amp to pair with an Ashdown RPM-1 preamp and two Acme LowB2 series II cabs. I play an '84 Steinberger XL2 (all graphite boat-oar shape), a '93 Kubicki Ex-Factor, and an NS Design US5 EUB. In terms of sound and power, this poweramp is incredible. It drives my acme cabs (notable for being power-hungry) easily. The low tones it produces through them, especially the low-B string on my EUB, are unbelievable, remaining tight and focused, but also warm and huge. The mids and highs are clear and smooth. It has a very quick response and is very quiet, do to having several variable speed fans that are controlled automatically according to the temperature. [...] The poweramp is very cool looking, with a silver face, rounded chrome handles, an old-fashioned needle output guage for each channel and pop-out level controls. The on/off buttons for each channel are large metal buttons, fashioned after a retro car starter button. All in all, it has a sort of retro-avantguard look about it, like equipment in an old sci-fi movie. The build is very sturdy with rack-ears on front and back. It is, however, quite heavy and, although it is only two rack spaces high, it is very deep. To sum up: If you need lots of good clean power, have a strong back and an eye for style, this poweramp would be a great choice. Opinion: [MAG400H] The build quality is exceptional in and out. Good quality jacks, pots and cabinetry throughout. Though it only has a simple 5 band rotary eq, it is VERY effective and can be switched out of the chain if necessary. The input pre is VERY high-headroom/low noise and of course the signature Ashdown backlit VU is a useful and welcome retro feature. In addition to the 5 band eq, there are switches for deep and bright, which are not overpowering yet create above-subtle changes in tone. The sub octave is more of a tone/timbre control than an effect. When used sparingly, it creates a nice extension to the bottom end without creating any mud. Power wise, this amp can dish it out. It's not the loudest head I have owned but definately STRONG. The dual fans help keep it running cool, something all amp manufacturers should realize. [...] This is a very well built amp for the money. Currently I am only powering 2 SWR WM115 cabs but it still cranks. It will really shine with an Ampeg SVT 810 or 610hlf cab! Opinion: I've been using a Trace BLX80 for the last two years - bought it cheap when I joined a band after taking a few years out of playing. Great value for money but I wanted something with a lot more power, and above all, great tone. I've played nearly all the usual mid-to-high end bass amplification brands and Ashdown really does the trick. I run the amp with the preshape in, but the EQ and harmonizser out. I mix the clean/grind all the way to grind, i.e. the 12AX7. Unlike other 'hybrid' amps where the valve in the preamp seems to offer only a) impedance matching, and b) comfort to the purchaser, in the Ashdown it's configured so that it gets pushed a bit and really imparts a huge valve warmness to the sound that to my ears doesn't fall far short of an all-valve amp. It's certainly the closest I've ever heard a hybrid amp get in that respect. It *is* loud - I play mainly pub gigs so I enjoy the luxury of plenty of headroom, plus if I need a bigger rig for a gig
here and there then all I need do is sit it on top of a 1x15" cab and I'm made. If I get the need to do some serious rearranging of internal organs, Ashdown also make a 500w powered sub which takes the sub out (<140Hz) - scary. As it is, I play a Stingray 4 and the low end is all there where I need it. The low mids are especially well articulated by the combo. At the first gig I did with it I got tone compliments from quite a few non-musicians, which in my book is praise indeed. [...] If it's in your price range then you owe it to yourself to try one out.

Opinion: I have been a Trace [Elliot] user for over 12 years and do Love my AH500 head w/ the GP11 pre-amp. After hauling aroud a 85 pound amp and (2) 1048H(4x10) cabnets I decided to go to a combo. I use a 1992 Alembic Mark King Deluxe bass. I have been in contact with Mark Gooday and decided to give one a try, however they are not that easy to get a hold of in the US. But I did get to try one, and ordered it. I was afraid that it would loose it in a live/loud rock band but it keeped right up there with the old 300 lbs Trace that I hauled for years and didnt even break a sweat. I especially love the sub-harmonizer, it didn't muddy up the sound but it kicks that sub bass w/ just the right touch of finesse that is pleasing to the ear. If you are looking for a great amp to last you 10-15 years [...] and have the cash... you wont be sorry you got an Ashdown. Opinion: Ich spiele einen Electric Blue 130 mit 15"-Speaker und bin mit dem Sound sehr zufrieden. Gekauft habe ich das Teil allerdings eher wegen seines rückenschonenden Gewichts und seiner geringen Größe. Wenn man bei einem Kumpel im Dachgeschoß probt, sind das wichtige Faktoren... Auch die Optik spielte eine Rolle.

Opinion: This cabinet is excellent. In a way it reminds be of the warth of a classic Ampeg 8-10 cabinet, except this is only a 4-10. The bottom end is extremely tight as well as the entire spectrum. As far as I can tell there are no troughs in the sound this cabinet produces. If you have never played though an Ashdown cabinet, you should definitly try one.
